Budapest World Short Course: Day 5 Heats Wrap

Lets’ hear it for the boys.

Josh Yong and Matt Temple will spearhead Australia’s quest to claim the inaugural mixed 4×100m medley relay at the World Short Course Championships in Budapest.

While head coach Simon Cusack is yet to confirm tonight’s line-up, Yong and Temple were part of the heats team, along with backstroker Iona Anderson and freestyler Milla Jansen, that clocked 3:34.31 to qualify second, just a blink behind the USA (3:34.30).

The Dolphins, who have targeted relays in recent times at major benchmark meets, rested Yong from the men’s 50m breaststroke ahead of tonight’s final in which the winning time will go into the books as “world’s best” rather than a world record given its World Short Course debut.

Yong and Temple, who will also line up in tonight’s 100m butterfly final, were part of Australia’s bronze-medal combination of the same event in Paris, and Anderson was a heat swimmer.

“I’ve got a tight shoulder and to be honest, I love swimming relays so I was happy to miss my individual swim and get around the team atmosphere. Relays are such a big part of swimming for Australia and it’s just so good to be racing again,” Yong said.

“This is probably the most races I’ve ever had at a meet so I’m learning a bit on how to manage myself better.”

On the penultimate night of finals; Dolphins will swim in six finals at both ends of the distance spectrum – from 50s, to 400s.

In addition to the mixed medley relay final and Temple’s 100m fly final; Alex Perkins and Lily Price will contest the 100m butterfly final.
