2024 Swimming World Cup: Stop Three Wrap
Australia’s best open water Olympian, Moesha Johnson switched up her marathon speciality to take away silver in the third and final stop of the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup.
The Gold Coast based swimmer finished second in the women’s 800m freestyle, touching in at a personal best time of 8:18.24. The United States’ Katie Grimes and Claire Weinstein placed first (8:14.36) and third (8:18.41) respectively in the event.
A week before joining the Swimming World Cup in Singapore, Johnson won double gold in the Hong Kong leg of the 2024 World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup. For full results on stop four of the open water swimming series, see here.
Isaac Cooper snatched the men’s 50m backstroke crown back from South Africa’s Pieter Coetze (22.75) with a time of 22.61. Coetze won gold in the event in Incheon (Stop 2) ahead of Cooper who placed first in Shanghai (Stop 1) and Coetze placed second.
Cooper also won silver in Singapore in the 50m freestyle with a time of 21.01 behind Trinidad and Tobago swimmer Dylan Carter (20.82). Germany’s Maris Kusch placed third (21.04).
Cooper finished the 2024 Swimming World Cup as the highest-ranking Australian male, placing seventh overall. Brittany Castelluzzo was the highest-ranking Australian female in the series, finishing in twentieth place.
Castelluzzo and Bella Grant stormed the field to claim first and second respectively in the women’s 200m butterfly final.
Castelluzzo swum a personal best time of 2:03.44 and less than 0.5s behind her was Grant with a time of 2:03.92. Laura Lahtinen (FIN) finished almost three seconds behind the Australian duo, touching in third at 2:06.83.
Olympian Iona Anderson grabbed her first medal of the series when she touched the wall second in the women’s 50m backstroke. Regan Smith (USA) placed first at 25.48, followed by Anderson at 25.95 and then Ingrid Wilm (CAN) at 25.98 in a nail biter finish.
Anderson’s fellow WAIS club swimmer and Dolphin, Joshua Yong, won silver in the men’s 200m breaststroke (2:02.85). Caspar Corbeau (2:02.33) and Ilya Shymanovich (2:03.90) placed first and third respectively in the event.
