AusPlay data confirms Australia is a swimming nation
Annual sport and physical activity data released by the Australian Sports Commission has confirmed that Australia is a swimming nation.
In a year that has cemented swimming’s standing as Australia’s leading Olympic and Paralympic sport, AusPlay research has once again established swimming amongst Australia’s leading participation sports.
The Australian Sports Commission’s national AusPlay survey collects data on over 600 different participation sports and activities and is the largest and most comprehensive survey of its kind in Australia.
The latest AusPlay research confirms more than 4.4 million Australians participated in swimming over the year to 30 June 2024, with strong participation rates across every age group and every state and territory.
Swimming is the most popular sport and activity for children (aged 0-14), with more than 1.1 million participants. Swimming is particularly popular amongst women and girls, who represent 53% of all swimming participants.
Swimming Australia CEO, Rob Woodhouse, said the AusPlay data reflects Australia’s strong affinity with swimming and its standing as Australia’s national sport.
“Whether it’s doing laps at the local pool, training with the local swimming club, learning to swim or being inspired by the Dolphins competing on the international stage, there is no doubt that Australians love swimming,” he said.
“Swimming plays an important role as part of our national fabric, promoting individual health and wellbeing and bringing people and communities together around a shared passion.
“Swimming Australia is committed to working with our members and partners to ensure that Australia remains a swimming nation.”
