Day 3: Aust A Team, Irvine TYR Pro Champs
A FLURRY of four golds for Australia A on penultimate night of finals at the TYR Summer Championships in Irvine, California.
Made up of experienced Australian representatives and rising stars vying for a position at next year’s Commonwealth Games, the Australia A team has faced tough international competition in Irvine – including nine-time US Olympic gold medallist Caeleb Dressel – with the meet also serving as a key selection event for the US team for 2026 Pan Pacific Championships.
Fresh off his 100m butterfly gold, Ben Armbruster doubled down with a win in the 50m butterfly. The Dolphin from Stanthorpe in rural Queensland set a TYR Pro allcomers record of 23.00, edging out Tokyo Olympic champion Dressel (23.28) and Aiden Hayes (23.57).
It was another dominating performance from our women’s relay team who took the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay gold by more than 20-seconds.
Molly Walker, Amelia Weber, Jaimie De Lutiis and Inez Miller flew the flag for the Australia A team to win in 7:52.82. Boilermaker Aquatics placed second at 8:13.19 following by University of Pittsburgh (8:15.96).
Rising stars Jaimie De Lutiis and Layla Day also claimed their first golds of the meet. West Illawarra’s De Lutiis, who won silver in the 50m freestyle, upgraded to gold in the 100m freestyle, touching in 54.36 ahead of US swimmer Bella Sims (54.45).
Other highlights from Day 3:
- In the women’s 100m backstroke, Layla Day shone with a winning time of 1:00.16, holding off Erika Pelaez (1:00.29) and Rhyan White (1:00.65). Australia’s Semra Olowoniyi and Alyssa Burgess also reached the A final, finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

- Se-Bom Lee had a gutsy swim in the men’s 400 IM, finishing fourth. His time of 4:15.74 only a couple of seconds behind third-place Kieran Smith (4:13.67).
