Women in Coaching

Swimming Australia’s Women in Coaching initiative is a bold, long-term commitment to creating an inclusive coaching environment where women can thrive—at every level of our sport. Grounded in our organisational values of Courage, Unity and Excellence, this initiative seeks to increase the representation, visibility, and progression of female coaches across all levels of swimming in Australia.

The vision is clear: we aim to build a coaching pathway that not only welcomes women but supports them with the tools, networks and professional development opportunities to lead confidently and succeed. This includes fostering sustainable career progression, breaking down systemic barriers, and nurturing a cultural shift that promotes shared leadership and equity as the standard.

A key starting point for this initiative is the Women in Coaching Survey, circulated nationally to better understand the experiences, needs, and aspirations of women currently coaching across all levels. The insights we are gaining will help to shape real, actionable steps—ensuring that our efforts are grounded in the lived experiences of coaches within our community. Complete the survey HERE

One of the first actions to emerge within the strategy is the launch of The W32 Project—a six-month development program designed for women who show strong potential to grow into future coaching roles, particularly in performance spaces. The program includes face-to-face sessions, webinars, mentoring, and practical development activities, all built around the real-life schedules of active coaches. It’s about more than upskilling; it’s about building confidence, creating connection, and tackling the unique barriers that women often face in our sport. Applications for The W32 Project are NOW open. CLICK HERE to apply and access further information.

As the Women in Coaching initiative evolves, new programs, partnerships and support systems will be rolled out to further strengthen the pathway for female coaches. More information will be made available as these developments continue to unfold—this is just the beginning.
