Day 4: Aust A Team, Irvine TYR Pro Champs

Let’s hear it for the girls.

Australia A’s women cleaned up on the final day of the TYR Summer Championships in Irvine, California – striking gold in four events and delivering three 1-2 finishes to cap a dominant meet.

Rising stars like Jaimie De Lutiis and Sienna Harben have exploded onto the scene over the past four days, racking up multiple medals. Meanwhile, Dolphins Ben Armbruster, Tiana Kritzinger and Se-Bom Lee drew on their international experience to steer the Aussie charge and claim gold of their own.

Paris Olympian Armbruster looked in season-best form this week, claiming the men’s 50m and 100m butterfly. Budapest World Short Course Dolphin Kritzinger added to her earlier 1500m triumph with gold in the 800m freestyle tonight, while two-time Olympic Dolphin Lee charged to victory in the men’s 200m backstroke on Day 1.

Notably, Dolphin stalwart Shayna Jack’s younger brother Jamie fired a warning shot to his rivals and is one stroke closer to the Glasgow green and gold with a 21.43 in the men’s 50m freestyle heats before storming home to gold.

Australia flexed their relay dominance yet again, taking out the men’s 4x100m medley relay and going 1-2 in the women’s showdown. The Australia ‘A’ women’s quartet of Layla Day, Sienna Harben, Isabella Boyd and Jaimie De Lutiis (4:00.55) just held off the fast-finishing Australia ‘B’ line-up of Semra Olowoniyi, Mia O’Leary, Bella Grant and Inez Miller (4:03.36).

In other events:

  • Molly Walker chased down Kritzinger to claim silver in the women’s 800m freestyle. Her time of 8:34.04 just falling short of Kritzinger’s 8:32.98 but awarding Australia with their first 1-2 finish of the day.
  • Harben had a powerhouse 100m breaststroke swim (1:07.67). Finishing behind her was fellow Aussie O’Leary (1:09.07) and Fresno’s Mackenzie Lung (1:09.37).
  • Australia’s Semra Olowoniyi and Layla Day were bookends with gold and bronze respectively in the women’s 50m backstroke. Olowoniyi stormed to gold in 27.93, then US’ Erika Pelaez (28.07) and Day in 28.24.
