Lello Brick Road for Griffith Swimmer
RISING swim star and Griffith University student Bailey Lello is taking care of business – in and out of the water.
The 21-year-old has his sights set on the 2028 LA Olympics and at the same time carving out a career in the business world.
First year student Lello is simultaneously in pursuit of a graduation cap – and a gold cap as senior Dolphins’ swimmer – and a scholarship from Griffith University is helping to set him up to achieve both.
After a false start on an engineering degree in which Lello sacrificed his studies to focus on swimming, the breaststroker is back in the fast lane thanks to a multi-year partnership between Swimming Australia and Griffith University.
Coached by Maxine Sear and progressing well through a Bachelor of Business degree, Lello said: “I found the student-athlete program and the support provided at Griffith Uni is superior in comparison (to other universities).”
“It was great to receive the scholarship, I felt relief in the fact that I’ll now be supported to excel at swimming and my studies. It’s game changing and an extra nudge in the right direction.
“I am more focused on swimming but I know it’s not going to last forever, so that’s why I’m studying at Griffith at the same time so that I’m set up for once I’m eventually finished in the pool.
“The 2028 Olympics is my big picture goal and everything in the next four years will build towards that, like World Cup.”
Lello will compete in Shanghai (China) and Incheon (South Korea) this month at the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming World Cups.
Five student-athletes were awarded individual $5000 tailored scholarships from Griffith University in 2024:
- Bailey Lello (Bachelor of Business)
- Charlotte Hansen (Bachelor of Physiotherapy)
- Mia Feltham (Bachelor of Exercise Science)
- Karl Albertyn (Bachelor of Sport Development / Bachelor of Business)
- Sally Vagg (Bachelor of Communication and Journalism / Bachelor of Political Science and International Relations)
