All you need to know for Aus Vs The World
Held under lights at Brisbane’s The Valley Pool on Friday 12 Dec at 6:30pm AEST, Team AUS and Team WORLD will compete in traditional distance events + events that you’ve never seen before… think skins, mystery relays, power plays and secret weapons.
Here’s your ultimate guide to Australia versus The World:
No times, just pure points
The first to hit the wall will win 5 points for their team.
1st = 5pts, 2nd = 3pts, 3rd = 2pts, 4th = 1pt
Watch out! As double points and stealing points will be on offer throughout the night.
Power Plays
Each team has 3x power plays in their arsenal BUT a power play can only be used once for a male event, once for a female event and once for a relay. When a team activates their power play and hit the wall first, their points are doubled, scoring a massive 10 points! If both teams choose to make a power play for the same event, it’s double points to the winner only.
25m Sprint Series
Selected swimmers will race three 25m freestyle sprints across the night. The male and female ‘Sprint Champion’ will be calculated by all three race times added together and divided by three. The male and female swimmer with the fastest average time will take the title and the 5pts, second place wins 3pts and third place get 2pts.
400m Speed Challenge
In the men’s and women’s 400m freestyle, it’s not just about the final touch – every lap counts! The leader at each 100m checkpoint will win a bonus point.
50m Skins
The pressure is on for swimmers to not be eliminated. At the end of each round, the last swimmer to touch the wall will be eliminated, and so on, until there are only 2 swimmers left for the third and final 50m sprint.
The faster you swim, the more recovery time you have because the clock is ticking with only 2-minutes to race, get out of the pool and back on the blocks ready to dive in again.
All skins winners will compete in their champion stroke in the ultimate Champions Race with staggered starts and double points on offer.
Mystery Events
The Mega Relay: A mixed 6x50m freestyle relay and the fans in the stands get to vote if a male or female swimmer leads.
Fans’ Choice Relay: A 4x50m mixed relay but the fans in the stands choose if it’s a medley or freestyle relay just before they dive in, no last minute swimmer swaps.
The Mystery Medley: A 200m individual medley but the order of strokes is decided right then and there from a live roulette wheel. Each lane is a different order, so don’t look away!
The Fans’ Secret Weapon: A mixed 4x25m freestyle relay where the fans in the stands can vote to sub out a swimmer for another. The coaches must decide who will be cut to make room for The Secret Weapon.
