Learning to swim

Learning to swim is an important life skill and it’s never too late to get started! Learn to swim programs are open to all ages and abilities, providing many benefits for people with disability. For example, enhance social connection with their community, physical health benefits and mental health benefits.

There are many Learn to Swim & Water Safety providers across Australia that will support you and your family with learning and developing your love for the water.

You can find more information by visiting a learn to swim provider, to start, contact your local swim, recreation and aquatic centre to understand what is available in your area.

Here are some suggested questions to ask when connecting with your local Learn to Swim provider

  1. Do your instructors have any training or certifications with supporting swimmers with disability?
  2. Does your facility offer private lessons (one to one)?
  3. Does your facility offer any additional programs that support people with disability to participate, like sensory strategies to support autistic swimmers?
  4. What accessibility features does your facility have, both accessing the changing area, bathrooms, café and carpark?
  5. What accessibility features does your pool have, including hoist, ramp, stairs with rails, do you use any wayfinding technology at your facility like Bindi maps?
  6. Is there flexibility in the lesson structures as my child’s/ my disability may mean I need to do some things differently?
  7. Is there someone who can give me a tour of the facility before my first lesson so that I can feel more comfortable in a new environment?
