Aus Age Champs: Moclair flirts with world junior record

Fans in the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre stands were treated to two national age records during this morning’s fast and furious heats on Day 3 of the Australian Age Championships.

Australia’s fastest 18-year-old boy in the water, Ollie Moclair (pictured) flirted with the boys’ 50m freestyle world junior record and sent an ominous warning to his competitors ahead of tonight’s final.

Moclair from Cranbrook ripped a 21.73 in the heats and broke his own boys’ 18 years national age record of 22.04, set in December at the NSW State Age Championships.

If it was not for the technicality of Moclair’s birthday, he would have set a world-best time. World Aquatics Junior World Records eligibility state that the athlete must be 18 years old on December 31 of the year the swim occurs – Moclair will celebrate his 19th birthday in August.

Christopher Montana soon followed suit and shaved 0.04 off his national age record in the boys’ 16-year 50m breaststroke to set a new mark of 28.32. The Trinity Grammar swimmer simultaneously holds the 15 year boys’ and 16-year Australian and all comers record for this event at Age Nationals.

This comes after Lincoln Wearing (Chandler) went sub-8minutes in the boys’ 16-year 800m freestyle last night and set a new national age record of 7:56.04.

Wearing will also feature in the pool tonight as a top contender in the boys’ 16-year 400m individual medley.

Finals start 6pm AEST, watch live and free on 9Now.
