Response to IOC Transgender Eligibility Rules

SWIMMING Australia acknowledges the IOC’s decision to adopt a policy that ensures participation in the female category at the Olympic Games and IOC events is restricted to biological females, determined by a one-time gene screening process and implemented for the LA28 Olympic Games.

As an organisation, we follow the competition guidelines set by IOC, and our governing body World Aquatics, and as such, athletes eligible for team selection are subject to the guidelines.

As the national sporting body, Swimming Australia remains committed to fairness and inclusion for all athletes, while taking into account the legal frameworks in Australia (Sex Discrimination Act 1984) and internationally.

It is incumbent on Swimming Australia to continue to prioritise the physical and psychological wellbeing of all participants in sport and as such will seek guidance from the Australian Sports Commission as they investigate elements of the IOC’s policy related to transgender and intersex athletes.
