Talented? Tick!
Killer instinct? In spades.
Born racer? Without a doubt.
Australian Dolphin? You betcha – #877.
Come July 27, when Abbey Webb dives into the purpose-built World Aquatics Championships Arena in Singapore for the women’s 4x100m women’s freestyle relay, another milestone will be ticked off.
And that is her first swim as a senior Australian Dolphin.
Webb, 24, represented Australia at junior level in 2018 but then a seven-year odyssey took her to the United States to swim, study, and swim some more.
Webb, who has trained at the ACT Performance Centre since its inception, first started her journey with Head Coach Shannon Rollason in 2018.
The renowned head coach, who has coached the likes of triple Olympic medallist Jodie Henry and recently Bronte Campbell, said: “She’s certainly got the attributes to be an Olympian. Abbey has a killer instinct.”
“With those athletes, it’s about harnessing it. On race day, you want those racers. They are the people who can lift.”
Webb’s swimming journey saw her compete in Auburn’s 2019-20 season only to transfer to North Carolina State University to study a Bachelor of Science with a minor in psychology.
But her Dolphins ambitions saw her pop her university study on hold and return to Rollason’s training regime – the program that had placed her on Australian Junior and Australia A teams.
“It’s been a dream of mine for so long to earn my Dolphins pin, I went to the Youth Olympic Games (where she won a relay silver) and then obviously wanted to make an Olympics,” she said.
“I thought my best chance to do this was to return home.”
POD POP UP STAT: The Canberra-raised local will swim the relays for the 100m and 200m freestyle at Singapore World Championships. She would usually compete in butterfly and backstroke but since January have concentrated on the free – and you can say the focus has paid off!
