Bio
Alex was born in Port Elizabeth South Africa in 2005 and became sick when he was one. He became weak and his ability to walk and talk deteriorated, which led to extensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
As he got older, he struggled with gross motor skills such as running and jumping, often falling over if he ran too fast.
At age seven, he was diagnosed with Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy that became more pronounced as he got older, which often led to disqualifications at swim meets.
In 2013, Alex and his family moved to Western Australia where he pursued multi class swimming at the Bunbury Swimming Club and was given the nickname the ‘Bunbury Bullet’. He continued to hone his skills in the water at the Bunbury Swimming Club and qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics but was unable to attend because he was not internationally classified.
He was awarded the Wally Foreman Foundation Scholarship shortly after unofficially breaking the world record in the men’s 200m butterfly S9 by over five seconds. In 2022, Alex represented Australia at the World Championships in Coimbra, Portugal, placing seventh in the 200m IM (S10) and bronze in the 100m butterfly (S10).
He made his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham 2022, where he won silver in the men’s 100m butterfly S10. He qualified for the 2024 Paris Para Games after strong performances at the Australian Swimming Trials.
