Swim Coaches Guidance

Australian Swim Coaches play a vital role in creating safe, positive, and athlete-centred environments. Under the SANCF, every coach is required to hold an Australian Swim Coach Licence and operate in line with national standards that define safe practice, professional behaviour, and ongoing development.

To coach under the SANCF, all Australian Swim Coaches must:

Hold and Maintain an Australian Swim Coach Licence

Coaches are required to renew their licence on an annual basis and meet all associated compliance expectations.

Meet Behavioural, Professional, and Safeguarding Standards

Coaches uphold the national conduct expectations that apply in every coaching environment- on deck, online, and in the community. This includes modelling respectful behaviour, prioritising athlete wellbeing, and following all safeguarding procedures for children and young people.

Engage in Ongoing Education and Professional Learning

Coaches participate in continuous learning through SPLASH Hub, including courses, workshops, webinars, and development activities at their own pace. Ongoing education ensures coaches can remain current in technical knowledge, coaching methodology, and best-practice athlete development.

Understand Their Responsibilities at Each Coaching Level

Coaches operate within the scope of their licence and training. New Swim Coaches or Coaches who are under the age of 17 should work under supervision; more experienced coaches take on greater autonomy and leadership responsibilities.

Access Support, Resources, and National Guidance

Australian Swim Coaches are supported through nationally aligned tools, resources, and assistance designed to strengthen practice and build confidence. This includes access to the Training Library and Resource Library via SPLASH Hub, development opportunities, and enhance guidance to support coaches in the daily training environment.

Whether entering the sport for the first time or progressing toward more roles, Australian Swim Coaches follow a structured, nationally consistent system that builds capability, supports athlete wellbeing, and maintains professional coaching standards across the country.
